ASRC October 18, 2007 African Family and Society I. African Family and “Gender” Relations a. The African Metaphysics (World View) b. All human societies have a metaphysical view of the world – either stated or unstated c. A metaphysics can be taken to be a presumption, an absolute presumption, an initial postulate upon which we precede to act socially, culturally, humanly d. We can even talk about the metaphysics of academic disciplines such as science, humanities studies, social science studies, etc. e. So? Metaphysics is a worldview summing up the nature of things in the world. And such the nature of things includes societies, humans, knowledge f. Nobody, no human society acts without metaphysics, issue is that metaphysics can be stated or unstated g. A metaphysics is part of the immaterial aspect of culture h. To deny metaphysics is to assume that we act in a void. And that is countering intuitive. II.
