Jan 30: News as Persuasion Intro: Expectations of News Media in American society I. News as a Construct News is a  version      of reality      that is selected and shaped by journalistic norms and conventions.  It  functions as a gatekeeper, choosing the information important to us. News is shaped and delivered by news organizations  engaged in relationships with advertisers,  parent companies, government agencies, audiences and competing news organizations. - Penny Press (1830’s): news audiences are sold to advertisers - Current trends in media consolidation II. News Media as a Persuasive Product******* Personalized—mass media news needs to be accessible to a wide audience.  News stories should be  clear, simple and attention-grabbing.  Focusing on people in a news story can be effective because  others can identify with them.
