I. Massachusetts  a. Puritanism  i. in the early 1500s, Europe began a culture war between Protestants and  Catholics.  Protestant comes from the word protest, they were protesting  against the Catholic church.  They thought a lot of the traditions, rituals, and  practices were not biblical (ex. Being able to buy your way out of purgatory) .  Different countries in Europe became predominantly Catholic or Protestant and  would battle. ii. Henry VIII was king of England.  He is pro-Catholic.  The pope gave him  the title of "Defender of the Faith".  Henry VIII then becomes having problems  with his wives.  Initially he can not get a divorce (or annulment).  Henry VIII  separated England from the Catholic church.  In doing so, he made himself the  head of the Anglican church and divorced himself, and also got the power and  wealth of the Catholic church because he no longer had to share. iii. Protestants who initially rebelled against the Catholic now also rebelled  against the Anglican because they didn't see enough change.  These were the  Puritans.  They went on to form Massachusetts. iv. Puritans believe that God was sovereign (all powerful, all knowing and  completely in control).  Puritans believed it was impossible to understand God.  They had a view of humanity that humans were completely depraved and  worthless.  They believed God established a covenant with human kind,
