1 Engineering Estimation Why do we need to estimate? • Estimates within an order of magnitude allow us to quickly check the feasibility of a conceptual design. • Estimates allow us to check that assumptions and “facts” are reasonable. • Estimation allows us to check that a detailed problem solution is reasonable. • Estimations are done with information that you already have, or can obtain easily. Fermi Questions • Enrico Fermi was a famous physicist, and questions meant to be solved by a “back-of-the- envelope” calculation are often called Fermi questions. • Fermi was known to be able to approximate answers to all kinds of questions in his head. • I will ask a Fermi question on the second quiz!!
