Neal Johnson Cell Biology Dr. Schau Thursday, May 7, 2009 Abstract The purpose of this lab was to determine who the father of the baby crane is. We used the process of electrophoresis to test this. First, we set up the electrophoresis chamber. Then we loaded the chamber’s wells with the samples of the DNA from the mother, child, and the two potential fathers. After the gel was run for about an hour we saw the results. By comparing the number of base pairs in each strand it was clear the Sire two was the father. Six of the twelve results were identically matched to Sire two, and the other seven were matched to the mother.

Unformatted text preview: There is a question about the parent-age of cranes because of the way the eggs are fertilized. Scientists have found it more effective to use semen from multiple fathers to fertilize the egg because it raises the chances of the egg actually being fertilized correctly. If the offsprings sample matches neither of the potential fathers, there is a good chance the either something went wrong in the electrophoresis testing, or the wrong samples were used for the test. If the mo-ms sample does not match the offspring it would be clear that the wrong samples were used....
