Cynthia Okoye NPD – 2000 Essay – 2 May 11, 2007 The Ethics of Human Trafficking As a young women growing up in the United States I was sheltered for most of my life from the realities of our world. It wasn’t until I reached high school that my teachers started having us do in depth research on third world countries that my eyes were opened. I was exposed to poverty so severe that I could not imagine how these people found the energy everyday to get up and keep trying. The situation that has touched my soul so deeply is the situation of young Nigerian women being trafficked into the sex trade industry. As I researched this topic I couldn’t help but keep asking why these slave holders traffic these young women into the sex trade. Do they not know that what they are doing is wrong, or is it a case of they simply do not care? According to Nel Noddings ethics of care we have a moral obligation to care for those who are suffering. There are two criteria that govern our obligation to care for others; first is the existence of being related to the person suffering or the potential to be related to that person. Second is the potential that the person suffering will then reciprocate the care that was given to them back to the person who cared for them in the beginning (Timmons p.203).

Okoye In the United States we have privileges and benefits that a lot of countries will never see. Nel Noddings says that it is our obligation to care for those around us. There are some who care naturally and no ethical efforts are required. There is an impulse that arises in these people that says “I must do something” (Timmons p.204).
