Launched a series of five-year plans having a goal of modernizing Soviet industry
and farming—government ordered peasants to hand over land to join collective
farms so when farmers resisted, millions were sent to labor camps or executed
Under his harsh rule, industry expanded
Benito Mussolini
= (1922) became dictator of Italy
Played on Italian anger about Versailles treaty ending WWI—did not grant Italy
the territory it wanted
Used economic unrest and fears of a communist revolution to win support for
himself and his Fascist Party
Outlawed all political parties except his own; controlled the press and banned
criticism of government
Used foreign conquest to distract Italians from economic problems at home
