January 28, 2007 APPLICATION ACTIVITY #1 FIELDWORK This exercise allows you to actively engage a sociological method of research – participant observation – in analyzing your everyday surroundings. Prior to class on Monday, January 29, spend at least one hour closely observing the physical/social environment and social interactions at a site of your choice. Select a site that has plenty of interaction happening, such as a coffee shop or restaurant, the gym where you work out, the dining hall on campus or a common social gathering place for students. Following your observation, respond to the questions/areas listed below. I will be collecting your responses on Monday, which should be typed . It may help to take notes while observing. We will be discussing your observations in class on Monday and applying course material to your findings. Therefore, please be prepared to discuss your experience and your responses. 1.
