CHAPTER 2: THE CHEMISTRY OF LIFE 2.1 Atomic mass unit/amu/Dalton = mass of proton = 1.7 x 10 -24  g Mass of electron = 9 x 10 -28  g = .0005 Da Element; a pure substance containing only one kind of atom Atomic number: number of protons/number of electrons Atomic mass: protons + neutrons averaged over isotopes (ex. He = 4.003) Number of neutrons determines isotope Radioisotopes: unstable; spontaneously give off energy in the form of  α, β, or γ radiation; used in medicine for tracking Orbital: region of space where electron is 90% of the time; occupied at any time  by maximum of 2 electrons First shell: 1s orbital; can hold 2 electrons Second shell: 2s orbital and p x , p y , and p z  orbitals; can hold 8 electrons Electrons in outermost shell (valence) determine bonding with other atoms 2.2 Compound: molecule made up of atoms of two or more elements bonded together
