Labor History February 18, 2008 I. Fordism (Redux) The Catches a. Thrift and character- Ford employees had to take tests to make sure they were fitting “ford character” b. If they didn’t pass tests, their wages were cut c. Ex. i. Living with only nuclear family, no alcohol ii. Carrot and stick effect- pattern of social control iii. Had to become “Americanized” d. Workers paid for $5 by themselves- cream of the crop came to work so production went faster e. Ford didn’t know what to do when Depression hit because no one could buy his products anymore i. Anti-Semitic: The Jew: The Problem ii. Used depression to be anti-jew; became enthralled with Hitler II. Economy of the 20’s a. Herbert Hoover Elected in 1928- said there were not problems in the country b. Weak Spots in Country: i. Inequality; top 1% got 63% of all income in country ii. Agricultural Sector is becoming weak 1. Gov. had given farmer subsidies during war but after war farmers were producing too much; making too little
