The topic of my paper is the high incarceration rate of African American males in America, as opposed to white males. The paper will prove that this occurrence is the result of systemic racism in the legal system as well as among law enforcement officers. I will critically analyze the way race plays a detrimental role in the way African American men are treated by law enforcement, and how their lives are affected by it. I hope to thoroughly encompass the perspective of African American men, and by doing so prove that the high incarceration rates are directly correlated to racism.I will do this through examining statistics proving higher incarceration rates in America’s jail systems as well the reasoning behind them. Through this I hope to also acknowledge and discuss research on how the culture of racism contributes to this. I will also involve studies that of which explore police brutality against African Americans during arrest and throughout incarceration. In addition, I will examine the effects mass incarceration has on African American’s individually and in their community as a whole, which can be done through research and examining statistics.
