The department designedit and it is available to students on Canvas.COURSE PURPOSE:The purpose of this class is to provide the opportunity for students to learn and adopt principles, techniques,methods and strategies to be successful in college and in life. This will be accomplished by emphasizing threeareas: 1.) academic skills, 2.) behavioral principles, and 3.) relational skills.COURSE DESCRIPTION:This course provides an opportunity for students to develop effective strategies and techniques to succeedin college. Topics include an introduction to the college and its resources; setting academic, career, andpersonal goals; identifying learning styles and study strategies; the importance of active participation andcollaboration in the learning process; time management; communication skills; emotional intelligence;financial responsibility; and an introduction to the college’s learning management system.LEARNING OUTCOME:As a result of successfully completing SLS 1101, the students will understand, demonstrate and apply theprinciples ofproblem solvingandcritical thinking.BROAD COURSE OBJECTIVES:To develop self-sufficiency and personal responsibility, through an exploration of personalvalues, motivational techniques, and life goal setting and a sense of personal self -worthTo demonstrate effective communication competencies by developing reading, writing,speaking, and listening skills.To provide students with a usable set of academic study skills applicable for success in college,career, and life.To develop critical and creative thinking skills and techniques to become effective problemsolvers.To develop information management skills necessary to conduct research, including thecollection, verification, documentation and organization of information from multiple sources.To develop interpersonal skills by understanding the principles of interpersonal relationships,and practicing the techniques for personal communication, conflict resolution, and teamwork.GRADING:
