Part 1- ID John Foster Dulles - U.S. Secretary of State under Dwight D. Eisenhower from 1953 to 1959. Significant figure in the Cold War era and strong advocate for taking a strong stance against communism. He played a great role in CIA operations to overthrow the Mossadegh government of Iran in 1953 and the democratic Arbenz government of Guatemala in 1954. He also advocated support of the French in their war against the Viet Minh in Indochina and famously refused to shake the hand of Zhou Enlai at the Geneva Conference in 1954. Meiji Restoration - The famous chain of events that led to enormous changes in Japan’s political and social structure in the latter half of the 19 th century. Probably the most important foreign account of the events between 1862-1869 and was a period that spanned the late Edo Period and the beginning of the Meiji Era. The restoration was a direct response to the opening of Japan by the arrival of the Black Ships of Commodore Matthew Perry . This restoration made
