Europe What Challenges does the European Union face in the Future? The EU has made many strides in recent years, but they still have many problems that they are going to face in the future. George Washington predicted that some day there would be a “United States of Europe” In 1992 the EU took a major stride towards that goal as they decided to drop border controls, issue a common currency (euro), and create a common foreign policy and defence policy. The Euro was launched in 2002 and is now one of the world’s major currencies. The Eu is considered a voluntary union based on liberal democratic principles. The EU is still very far away from realizing GW’ prediction. The EU members have been reluctant to give up national sovereignty on defense and foreign policy issues. They have decided to create a sixty thousand strong Rapid Reaction Force but has been slow to find the necessary funding.
