10/03/2008 09:05:00 Election of 1986 :  William mCKinley of ohio William J. Bryant Henry Adams said this election was the American people’s last chance:  democracy vs. plutocracy. He said plutocracy was victorious. Claims: voting scandal: votes thrown out??  Argued that free silver meant inflation, which was the goal of the farmers. Anyone  on wages or fixed salaries feared this, and they voted for the republican candidate and  the gold standard The republican party candidates had more money than democrats, outspent  them by 10-15:1  Mark Hannah: “dollar mark Hannah” collected contributions from banks and millionaires,  3-5 million dollars spent on the election Madison Avenue style advertising: used some money to silence newspapers and some  to shower the country with propaganda Portrayed Bryant as a madman, a “repulsive viper” and a socialist
