Late 19 th  century? 25/02/2008 09:02:00 Triumph of American corporate capitalism = triumph of democracy. Factory workers had many worries to deal with… Important group: growing middle classmen of the Midwest, homes in suburbs of  Chicago and other cities. Businessmen, conservative politically and morally. Believed in  the self-made man. Private property was sacred. Ambition: private home ownership.  Tended to support big business against government and against unions. -Frightened by the corruption that existed in City, State, and Federal. Democracy  was in danger of perversion. Political system appeared responsive only to wealth.  Frightened by the appearance of the “trust”. Worried that the trusts were eliminating  competition between big business and local, smaller business.  Frightened as consumers because there was a “fixed” price of goods. Hard to get a  good deal. Afraid of the farmers because they were demanding higher prices for their crops.  AFRAID OF INFLATION! Feared the growing numbers of industrial workers who lived in city slums. Feared  them because they were no longer just Irish, but Italian, Jewish Russian, Polish, etc.  Feared the violence of strikes.  Middle class business held the balance of power by deciding who would
