Ilrob October 31, 2007 Strong Culture Organizations I. Groupthink a. Improve decision making by encouraging dissent b. Expression of dissenting opinions causes groups to: i. Explore more alternatives prior to making decision ii. Consider alternatives on both sides of the issue iii. Useful even when the dissenter is wrong c. Dissent must be confident, consistent, and authentic i. Assigning a devil’s advocate actually makes things worse 1. Have to actually believe in what you’re saying 2. Could get too heated if you’re unwilling to budge 3. Or group argues superficially 4. Makes group more confident in wrong decision ii. When you’re exposed to someone’s values that are so against your own, you get irritated II. Culture Strength a. A strong culture exists when there are a set of norms and values that are widely shared and strongly held i. Everyone knows what is important ii. Sanctions exist to punish those who do not comply iii. People who deviate are ostracized/rejected iv. Nothing is written down, everything is informal and known
