Thought or cognitive processes that take place within the minds of people which act to influence their behavior i. Expectancy Theory 1. Proposed by Victor Vroom in 1964 2. Expectancy: Can I do it? Probability assigned to completion of task 3. Instrumentality: Will I be rewarded? Will there be an outcome if goal is accomplished? 4. Valence: Do I care? Value attached to end of outcome 5. Multiplier Effect: E x I x V = Motivation (if any = 0, no motivation) ii. Beyond the “Person” 1. Situational approach to increasing work motivation 2.
