What is utility or happiness, if not simply pleasure and the absence of pain? the fulfillment of people’s INTERESTS WELFARISM - the thesis that the good is the fulfillment of people’s interests SOCIAL WELFARIST CONSEQUENTIALISM (SWC): the thesis that an action is right to the extent that it results in more interest fulfillment for all concerned (than other alternatives) THE SLAVERY ARGUMENT (AGAINST UTILITARIANISM)(321) (1) SWC says an action is right if it results in more happiness (aggregrate interest fulfillment) than alternatives. (2) In some circumstances, the retention of slavery would clearly maximize aggregate interest fulfillment. (3) Thus, in some circumstances, SWC would require the retention of slavery. BUT, We all know: (4) Slavery is always wrong. (5) SWC is false. perhaps a small number of slaves could make an enormous difference in the lives of the rest of a large society perhaps a particular form of slavery could make an enormous difference in the life of certain societies
