Being a “team player” is more important than job advancement II. Key Questions to Address a. How do people perform when working as a team opposed to working alone? i. Working in the presence of others ii. Sometimes improves performance, sometimes impairs iii. Social Facilitation- Do better in front of people when you know what you’re doing, do worse when you’re not sure what you’re doing iv. What is the explanation? 1. Arousal enhances whatever response is dominant (behavior during anxiety) 2. Presence of others increases arousal which in turn facilitates performance on easy tasks for which the dominant response is the correct one a. Organizational Implications? Working in cubicles vs. working in “bull pen” b. Complex actions probably better to do in cubical c. Simple/repetitive tasks better in open air b. How can we control and manage people’s behavior in teams? c.
