A Thousand Splendid Suns: Challenged A Thousand Splendid Suns is a novel that displays life in the Afghan culture. This novel has many instances of derogatory remarks and situations that are geared towards the women and children that are main characters. Many chapters degrade women by showing very little to no respect for them. As a young teen in a completely different society this book is an eye-opener. Growing up in America there are freedoms from a very young age that an individual is born with that ladies in the Afghan culture will never have the ability to enjoy. This novel gives the reader a tear-jerking inside look on the lives of the Afghan men, women, and children. Due to the many acts of unethical and unmoral violence, heart-wrenching verbal abuse, and a lack of inclusion for the women of the Afghan culture this book should not be a part of the required high school curriculum. In the novel there are countless acts of violence that are repulsive and agonizing to think about. At one point in the novel Rasheed is very angered with Mariam for the way she has been letting him down so to speak. In return for her "ill behavior" he does the unthinkable. Rasheed tells her to put rocks in her mouth and chew them. "Through the mouthful of grit and pebbles, Mariam mumbled a plea. Tears were leaking out of the corners of her eyes. 'CHEW!' he bellowed. A gust of his smoky breath slammed against her face. Mariam chewed. Something in the back of her mouth cracked. 'Good,' Rasheed said (Hosseini 104)." In this section of the book we see how violent Rasheed can truly be. He is pleased with the fact that he caused Mariam a great deal of pain. This act of violence is appalling. Another act of violence is when the warfare is raging on and Rasheed tells Mariam and Laila of the destruction outside their home. He states, " The streets became littered with bodies, glass, and crumpled chunks of metal. There was looting, murder, and increasingly, rape which was used to intimidate civilians and reward

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
