Search Engine v. Subject Directory A search engine searches only the web pages and web objects that the search engine has identified at any point in time. It is not able to give you access to everything that is available on the web. When you use a search engine, you are searching through billions of pages that are available. Directories are a collection of web sites that are organized by broad subject categories. When you search a directory, you are only searching the web sites identified and included in that directory. The directories work best when you want to browse a broad subject. If you start with a directory it can give you a good idea about how much web based information is out there on a topic. It also gives you topics you could sort through

Unformatted text preview: to make things more narrow. I realized through using both resources I was able to retrieve more scholarly arTcles From a subject directory than I did with the search engine. It's reFreshing to see that although there may be a smaller number oF results, the quality is not lacking by any means. When I typed "sustainable energy" into Google and Internet Public Library 2 I had two completely di²erent results. Google gave me about 57,200,000 results while the Internet Public Library 2 only gave me 500. I believe I will use subject directories in order to quickly fnd accurate inFormaTon that will aid me in my research....
