Trujillo, Mayra 2015-10-06 During this lab period, we will begin our experiment to measure how well a phagocyte (macrophage) can phagocytosis. To study phagocytosis some experiments may involve a treatment that can increase the number of phagocytes that become activated or may enhance the ability to phagocytosis. This experiment involves fluorescent polystyrene beads which will be phagocytized but not destroyed by the phagocytes. This will require two types of measurements. The first measurement will require a flow cytometer will measure how more many phagocytes become activated compared to the beginning of the experiment. The second measurement will involve looking under the microscope see if the treatment enhanced the ability of the phagocyte to phagocytosis. Our experiment involves using DAMPs (Damage Associated Molecular Patterns), which are released by dying or damaged cells, to which phagocytes activate and destroy the cell. The goal of our experiment is to answer the following question, Do DAMPs increase the number of activated phagocytes?

As a current student on this bumpy collegiate pathway, I stumbled upon Course Hero, where I can find study resources for nearly all my courses, get online help from tutors 24/7, and even share my old projects, papers, and lecture notes with other students.

The ability to access any university’s resources through Course Hero proved invaluable in my case. I was behind on Tulane coursework and actually used UCLA’s materials to help me move forward and get everything together on time.
