Metal Forming Processes Sheet forming processes Cold Working Sheet Metal Processes Sheet Metal Forming Processes *Forming and related operations on metal sheets, strips, and coils *Surface area-to-volume ratio is high Sheet Metal Processes Shearing – The Process *Shearing is a separation process , not necessarily a deformation process, but it does contain a small plastic deformation. *Shearing is accomplished by subjecting the work to shear stresses, typically between a punch and a die or shear blades. Shearing Process Shear Mechanism *What effect does die/punch clearance have? Shearing Process * Blanking operations keep the part that was cut out . * Punching operations removes portions of the base part and does not keep the removed material . (e.g. – punch a hole in the sheet stock, keep the sheet, discard the punched out material) Shearing Process Other Items *Slitting: *shearing carried out with a pair *Steel Rules: *hardened steel bent into desired shape (like a cookie cutter) *soft metals, paper, pressed fiber board, leather and rubber *Nibbling: *straight punch moved up and down rapidly as sheet is fed into it (CNC Turret Punch
