Romantic Sensibility: Celebrating Imagination Romanticism was first seen in Germany in the 2nd half of the 18th century. Romanticism has a strong influence on literature, music, and painting in Europe & England going into the 19th century. The influence of Romanticism reached America much later. Romanticism developed in part as a reaction against Rationalism Romantics believed that the imagination was able to discover truths that the rational mind was not able to reach. These truths often came with powerful emotions and were associated with natural, unspoiled beauty. Romantic artists would often contrast poetry with science.
