Script of presentation (Abdul Satar Edhi)Hi (Assalamu alaikum) everyone, my presentation is on, one of the most admiring people inPakistan and his name is Abdul Satar Edhi. Abdul Sattar Edhi was a Pakistani philanthropist whobuilt a nationwide network of humanitarian centers offering a wide range of life-saving servicesto the people of Pakistan. He has created an extremely developed network of aid units, both fixedand mobile, which have allowed humanitarian actions to take place also in other countries. Mr.Edhi was known as the “Father Teresa” of Pakistan.Starting from some background, on 28thFebruary 1928, he was born in a Muslim family in India.Abdul Sattar Edhi is a descendant from the Edhi family belonging to the Memons, an Islamicgroup living at the time in India. His father, Abdul Shakoor Edhi, was a commission agent inBombay and the family lived in Bantva, Gujarat, India. Encouraged by his mother, Abdul SattarEdhi as a small boy would help in a dispensary in the neighborhood to deliver medicines all overthe village and to spot handicapped and destitute persons in need of help.Growing up, his mother gave him 2 paisa, currently one paisa 1/100 of the Rupee, in which oneto be used for meal and another to give away to the child in need. From that we can see that hismother had impact on his life from early on. When he was 11, his mother suffered from a strokeleaving her paralyzed and mentally handicapped. But he decided to quit school and take care ofher and about 8 years later she passed away. In that time in 1947 the partition of India occurred, causing he and his family to start their lives over here in Pakistan. To support the family, heworked as a peddler in a market in Karachi. He noticed that people are in need of help. He said,I saw people lying on the pavement _ the flu had spread in Karachi, and there was no one totreat them. So, I set up benches and got medical students to volunteer. I was penniless andbegged for donations on the street. And people gave. I bought this 8-by-8 room to start mywork.”
