1WelfaredependencyintheUnitedStateshasamountedtoavastepidemicofconsistenteconomicdownfallforthenation.WhiletheUnitedStatesgovernmentprovidesafinancialsupportsystemforthegeneralpublic,agreatmanyofrecipientsaretakingadvantageofthissystem.Inorderforthegovernmenttoprovidethistypeofassistancetoover20%oftheAmericanpopulation,taxpayerscontributetothesecostswithashocking$152.8billiondollarseveryyear(LexingtonLaw).Manydeprivedindividualsbenefitgreatlyoffofthissupport,however,thosewhomakefraudulentandunnecessaryclaimsforwelfareallowtheprocesstobemuchmoreexpensivethanitshouldbe.Inasocietywheregovernmentassistancehasbecomeanessentialpartofhereditarybeingforsome,theUnitedStatesgovernmentmustconductindepthresearchbymeansofacknowledgingthecitizenswhoaregenuinelyinneed,thosewhoareposers,andhowtodistributemoneywithoutpermittingthenationtodrownindebt.Aspartofadevelopedandindustrializednation,citizensoftheUnitedStatesshouldnotbesuppressedtofamineorextremepoverty.Overtimehowever,thegovernmenthasrecognizedthatthereisapopulationofpeoplelivinginthecountrywhoarehungryanddestitute.Thereareamultitudeofreasonsthatwouldcontributetotheunfortunatecircumstancesoftheseindividuals.Inherarticle,“TheDeservingandUndeservingPoor,”AssociateProfessorofHistoryattheUniversityofNorthCarolina,LisaLevenstein,claimsthatavastpercentageofthepoverty-strickeninAmericaare,“...needybecausetheywereincapableofworkduetooldage,sickness,ordisability”.Evidently,thosewhosufferfromsuchintolerableconditionshavenowaytopreventtheeffectsoftheirdisabilitiesandlimitations.Quiteoften,theyareleftwithoutresourcesandbecomedesperate.Therefore,itisabsolutelynecessarythattheseindividualsbesupportedbythegovernmentinordertoprovidefoodandshelterforthemselvesandtheirfamilies.
