Ryan O’Hearn Chemical Principles I Lab - 1011.205.51 Decomposition of Compounds and Determination of Percent by Mass 17:53:27 Purpose To decompose compounds into their original elements or other compounds through chemical means. In previous experiments, we joined elements together to form a compound, but the means to break those back down into their original elements would be very difficult. This experiment will break two simple compounds down into multiple elements or compounds by using heat. We will also find the percent by mass of elements that were broken down from the original compound. Procedure See “Experiment Decomposition of Compounds and Determination of Percent by Mass” Chemistry 205 Lab Manual Data Tables, Graphs Part A: Salt = CuSO 4 Trial One Trial Two Crucible, Cover, Salt 20.902g 22.252g Crucible, Cover 19.818g 21.154g Mass of Salt 1.084g 1.098g Crucible, Cover, Product 20.503g 21.835g Mass of Product 0.685g 0.681g Mass of H 2 O 0.399g 0.417g Part B: Salt = NaHCO 3
