Computer Problem Set 2 #1 Descriptive Statistics- Gas Mileage You don’t have to hand in anything for #1. 1. Type in the gas mileage data starting in cell A1 (or just copy and paste). 13 15 16 16 17 19 20 22 23 23 23 24 25 25 26 28 28 28 29 32 2. Select Tools- Data Analysis- Descriptive Statistics. Click OK. Select the entire data set for the Input Range. Click in the box for Output Range. Then click on a blank cell on your worksheet away from the data (maybe C1). Click on Summary Statistics. Hit OK. Adjust the column width. The result displays several calculations but not the five- number summary. 3. You can also do some of the calculations manually. The data should be from A1 to A20. The expressions on the right perform the calculations. The labels appear on the left. Mean =average(a1:a20) Median =median(a1:a20) Standard Deviation =stdev(a1:a20) 4. You could also do the calculation by typing “=average(“ and then highlighting the data set and hitting enter.

5. Calculate a five-number summary. The expressions on the right perform the calculations. The labels appear on the left. 5 Number Summary Maximum =max(a1:a20) Q3 =quartile(a1:a20, 3) Median =median(a1:a20) Q1 =quartile(a1:a20, 1) Minimum =min(a1:a20) You don’t have to hand anything in from section #1. #2 Descriptive Statistics- IQ scores 1. Open the file TA01_006.XLS from the course web site. 2. Highlight the data (you can just click the cell in the upper-left corner of the spreadsheet). Select Data-Sort. Sort by Gender (ascending) and then by IQ (ascending). 3. Calculate a five-number summary for female IQ scores and a five-number summary for male IQ scores. Make sure each five-number summary is labeled. Present the five- number summaries as was done above in section #1.5. 4. Put your name in a cell near the five-number summaries. Highlight the five-number summaries. Go to print area- set print area. Go to print preview. Hit setup- sheet- gridlines. Print out your five-number summaries and name without the data set. 2

#3 Deficit Time Plot 1. Insert the following data into an Excel spreadsheet (you can just copy and paste). Select the data, including the headings. 3. Click the ChartWizard in the toolbar (bar graph icon) and select XY (Scatter) for Chart type and “Scatter with data point connected by lines” for the Chart sub-type. Hit Next. 4. Step 2 of ChartWizard displays a preview of the time plot.
