Background to professions and professionalism Nearly all human societies have had special people who could be said to minister to the perceived needs of that people/society: (1) Medicine men/health workers – ministers to physical health needs (2) Priests, shaman, spiritualists – ministers to religious/spiritual needs So medicine (medical ministers) and the clergy could be said to be the earliest professions and professionals. Today, medicine (doctors, health care) and law (lawyers) serve as paradigm examples of professions and professionals.
