Politics of ’68: end of ’67 can US govern itself student riots, war in Vietnam, slum riots. LBJ at head of party, ut looked incapable of governing nation. Eugene McCarthy ran as an insurgent peace candidate against Johnson. Did retail politics in NH McCarthy launched Tet offensive (well orchestrated attack against US embassy in Saigon). Even American embassy not secure so how could 60% be secure. Activists flooded NH to try to get people to vote for McCarthy. “Neat and cleans for Jean movement” and got massive resistance from gov. of NH. In the end he lost NH 42.5 versus 49.5. McCarthy beat expectations and within possibility of winning. RFK enters race 3 days after NH primary. RFK was an attack dog of family klan and had reputation for aggressiveness. After JFK’s death he softened in his position and caught wave of social change for civil rights. Johnson looked beatable. Kennedy and McCarthy were now both running against LBJ. McCarthy students pissed at Kennedy. McCarthy didn’t have working class support: RFK had promise of blue collar workers
