Race and Ethnicity Writing Assignment Philip Kada 1. Define race and ethnicity according to the text. Discuss how they differ. Give an example of a race and an ethnicity. Race is a socially constructed category of people who share biologically transmitted traits that members of a society consider important and ethnicity is a shared cultural heritage and usually a common ancestry. They differ because race is genetic which people are born with and ethnicity is a culture that a person is raised in and learn language and religion. An example could be that there is a Caucasoid person who is white yet this person can be several different ethnicities being a roman catholic speaking English or a Jewish person that may speak Hebrew. 2. Why is it impossible to use biological characteristics to support placing people into consistent races? Give three examples to support this from the video.
