in thermīs In the Baths, pages 46–48 I Near the baths was a temple which had been built by Roman craftsmen. King Cogidubnus was sitting in front of the temple with many chieftains and slaves. Quintus was standing near the king’s chair. A band of soldiers was guarding the king and the chieftains. In front of the temple was a huge altar, which all were looking toward. Memor, wearing a toga praetexta , was standing near the altar. Two priests, leading a black lamb, proceeded slowly to the altar. After the king gave a signal, one priest sacrificed the lamb. Then Memor, who was now trembling and sweating, said to the other priest, “I order you to look at the omens. Tell me: what do you see?”
