The Pentagon is the headquarters for the U.S. Department of Defense located in Arlington Virginia, just across the Potomac River from Washington D.C. the U.S. Capital. Before WWII broke out Washington D.C. held over 24,000 military personnel in 17 separate buildings located just adjacent to the national mall. These workspaces would not be able to accommodate the growing number of personnel so the U.S. Government searched for a new site to command the nation’s armed forces. Brigadier General Brehon B. Somervell commanded his lower officers Lieutenant Colonel Hugh J. Casey an engineer and architect George E. Bergstrom to write up plans for a new U.S. Defense Department headquarters on a tight schedule. The requirements were that the building must accommodate 40,000 people, be air conditioned and have only stairs. Casey and Bergstrom drew up plans for a pentagonal four story building meeting the standards in one weekend and proposed it to the Defense Department.
