HISTORICAL BACKGROUND Imperial Chinese system of Dynastic rule- regime based on hereditary  succession persisted more or less intact for close to 2000 years.  What accounted for such amazing persistence? o Combination of Performance and systm Legitimacy o Centralized Bureaucracy o Confucian Ideals Combination of Performance and system Legitimacy      o Legitimacy of particular ruling family (dynasty) was based on success  (mandate of Heaven), but underlying form of system legitimacy allowed  for periodic renewal and revitalization as dynasties were replaced, but  basic sociopolitical system remained intact.  Centralized Bureaucracy      o Not a true feudal system(-autonomous lords ‘self govern’ their own  estates) but one in which centralized state exercised control.  o Means by which state penetrated society was a large state  bureaucracy staffed through  o “MERITOCRACY     ”- system which jobs/positions are awarded on the  basis of ability, not connections or family.  Confucian Ideals.
