Germany ‘’Federal Republic of Germany’’ (Bundesrepublik Deutschland) Impacts of History -Germany only became a unified country relatively recently -Prior to 181, what is now Germany was a loose confederation( an association of stages in which each retains full sovereignty that cannot be overridden b the central government) of many different kingdoms, cities, etc. -Modern Germany created in 1871 as a result of military conquest by strongest of the states, PRUSSIA under the leadership of the “Kaiser” -The First Kaiser (Wilhelm) also introduced the world to a taste for funny hats and loopy mustaches. Three Consequences for Germany’s late foundations 1. FUSION OF CIVIL MILITARY AUTHORITY -Military became a key player in politics b/c of military never achieved CIVILIAN SUPREMACY-military to elected civilian leaders: essential to democracies. 2. PROBLEMS OF NATIONAL IDENTITY -Sudden Merger of many different NATIONALITIES as a result of unification created uncertainty over what it was meant to be GERMAN,
