JK Flip-flop Excitation Equations for State Machines Q J K JK Flip-flop Q Set action Reset action Characteristic Equation: + QJ Q + K Q = There are two equations involved in a sequential machine design using JK flip-flops to implement the state variables. They ultimately must be equal. One is the characteristic equation above and the other is from the sequential machine's present-state/ next-state requirements in the form of a Boolean function for each state variable. Consider one state variable Q among possibly many. The machine requirements give a Boolean equation: ( ) + Q f Q, {other state varialbes}, {inputs} = Hence, machine requirements demand: ( ) + JQ + KQ= Q f Q, {other state varialbes}, {inputs} = Set Q=0: Left-hand side becomes J and the right-hand side is a subfunction with Q=0
