Ron Walters 4/14/08 WR 121 Ruben Casas Summary Reaction William Zinnser’s essay Clutter opened my eyes to a whole new idea that I had never even thought of. His whole premise was to point out that we as Americans have begun to use too many words that are completely unnecessary and as such just “clutter” our writings. Zinnser’s thesis explains it all. By stating To write clean English you must examine every word you put on paper he does a wonderful job of making you stop and think about everything that you have written, and whether the words you use are just taking up space or need to be there. He uses many different examples to show what he is talking about. Using words such as “presently” instead of “soon”, “assistance” instead of “help”, “facilitate” instead of “easy”, and many other similar situations, you clutter up the paragraphs and cause your sentences to not flow as well as if you were to write it as if you were just talking to the person. He also claims that we start too
