Unformatted text preview: Microbiology 6-1-05 Second Half of Lecture Microbial Metabolism There are many aspects of microbial metabolism. Our focus is going to be on energy metabolism and the role of ATP. With metabolism, we are talking about those reactions involved with the replication of the virus, the replication of bacterial cell, and the synthesis of various components and so on. We are going to be looking at the energy metabolism. In terms of energy metabolism, one of the things that we want to look at is what are the nutritional needs of the bacterial cells? We will need to know something like this if we want to grow the organism in lab. We also might want to know this if we want to deprive it of something if we want to inhibit it from growing. The important thing with all of this is we what to know where we can intervene clinically where can we use our understanding of what is going on in terms of metabolism that can be used to treat particular infectious properties? Part I: Nutrition - We want to know what is needed- We want to know what gets into the cell and how it gets into the cell Part II: Reaction Series (We will talk about this.) Part III: Control (Just as we talked about control for viruses, we also have to talk about control of metabolism for the bacterial cell.) There are two broad mechanisms (this is kind of basic biology); allosteric enzymes or operon level control (in terms of microbial organisms). Diagram on page 53 of notes: This is just a general picture to show what kinds of metabolisms are possible. Now - Specific Nutritional Requirements of Cells: We can classify the organism based upon two categories: what is its carbon source? And what is its energy source (this one might be looked at more). Diagram on page 55 of notes: Now, we look at all organisms, and we see that we have those organisms that use light as their primary energy source phototrophic organisms (not of any particular medical importance in most cases it is most cases because there could be some strange infection that occurs in some patient as a result of some strange interaction but it is usually not a problem), and then we have the chemotrophs which use chemical compounds as their primary energy source. We have those that use inorganic processes versus organic processes: Chemolithotrophs (use inorganic chemicals) and Chemoorganotrophs (use organic chemicals like glucose). Phototrophic Metabolism Again, phototrophic, we are using light to make ATP. Carbon dioxide is going to be the Again, phototrophic, we are using light to make ATP....
