Christine Danielson Ms. McParland ENG4U June 2, 2015 Life of Pi Throughout the majorityLife of Pi,by Yann Martel, Pi is stranded at sea. Charles Darwin states that “It is not the strongest species that survives, nor the most intelligent that survives.It is the one that is the most adaptable to change.” To an extent this quote is very relatable to Pi. Pi faces many obstacles that he must overcome. His survival experiences change him and his view of the world. For example; Pi must find food while stranded, Deal with spiritual morals while trying to be faithful to god, and deal with mental/psychological hardships such as suffering and pain. Pi has lived a difficult couple months. During the 227 days he has been set out at sea, from the beginning it has been a struggle to find himself food. Especially since all his life he has been a very religious/vegetarian boy and all there is, is different types of fish, one bar of chocolate, and limited drinking water.In part two of the novel he finds that the water does not last him, as well as food, which he rationed out to 93 days out of the 227. He also notices that there is a rain catcher on the boat that he could use. “I examined one of the rain catchers. It was a device that looked like an inverted umbrella with a good-sized catchment pouch and connecting rubber tube.” (Martel 162) After Pi had resolved the water situation. He notices that he can has conquered the problem, but he relies on the weather for it to rain to be able to catch drinkable water. This changes his view of himself and the world because he knows the water is limited.
Next, Pi had a hard time with finding adequate food. Since he was vegetarian eating fish was not an option for him in the beginning, but as his survival instincts kicked in, he found that himself is more important. For example when he murders the turtle, drinks the blood, eats the fish, and
