Bob Odom stepped out of agriculture runoff race. We think that only 10% of AA voted for Jindal. Emergence of two party systems -really means the emergence of the republican party. -it took a lot to get the republican party. -AA weren’t voting. -lots of people in power could of changed that, but the person in power who started the change was Hubert Humphrey. A. race and southern strategy 1948-Humphrey, Thurmond Hubert Humphrey was from Minnesota. He wanted to go to LSU and get a master in Political Science. He was in school as the same time as Russell Long. He wanted to learn poor peoples politics. He came to Baton Rouge not knowing anything about race politics. 1948-end of WWII, there was a lot of movement to change things in the south. Humphrey made the first big step. 1948-democratic convention. This should be ranked as #1 well known. President Harry Truman was up for reelection, they thought he wouldn’t win again so, the democrats wanted to get a young fiery speaker. He gave a well known speech basically saying this is not about the well known traditions
