d. Modern governors 71-72- Edwin Edwards- very different than he is. He was first governor elected with lots of black support. He put a lot of blacks in office also. He was wildly popular. He was easily reelected 75-76- he changed the election law, but everyone knew he was going to get reelected. Good times for governor. 79-he was gone. No one knew what to do, and people thought he was going to be back. Even while he was not governor, people thought he would be governor again. People treated him like the governor. 79- first elected republican – David Treen. He wanted to do things differently. He came in and cut taxes, and started to cut programs. In the middle of his terms LA’s economy dropped on oil and gas. It was easy to be governor before this because there was lots of middle. But when economy dropped and oil prices dropped, 40% of our money was invested in oil. It wasn’t his fault but he was blamed for it. He ran for reelection but lost to Edwards. 83- Edwin Edwards-he won by a lot. Based on his first 2 terms and how economy was
