Objective : To better understand the formation and characteristics of wave, transverse wave, and standing wave. Also, to measure the wavelength of the transverse standing wave in a string to verify the relation between tension of the string (F n ) and the wavelength. Theory : A uniform string under tension with one subject to vibratory motion at right angles to its length, waves travel down it. Transverse waves are produced as each segment of the string that is disturbed moves in a direction perpendicular to the wave velocity. The wave will advance a distance of one wavelength in a time equal to one period T of vibration. Hence, v = wavelength/T of v = wavelength * frequency. The velocity of the wave also depends on the stiffness and density of the medium through which it travels. In
