1LAB REPORTSYNTHESIS AND DECOMPOSITION OF ARTIFICIAL KIDNEY STONES IN LAB ABSTRACT/INTRODUCTION:Kidney stones are observed to be a recurrent phenomenon that poses morderate to severe health issues among the general population. It is usually composed of the materials that are normally found in the urine that accumulates, becomes highly concentrated, and forms a solid. The formation depends on the diet and internal conditions that facilitates the formation. The stone may stay in the kidney hence hampering the functions of the kidney or get into the urinary tract, blocking it, hence causing severe pain and sometimes bleeding depending on the size ot the stones. The main objective of this experiment was to investigate the formation of kidney stones and devise methods to dissolve them using household products that can be consumed as food on a regular basis. Research studies indicates several types of stones commonly occuring in the kidneys some of
2which are Calcium Oxalate, Calcium Phosphate, Calcium Carbonate, Uric acid, Struvite and Cystine. In this lab we chose to synthesize 5g of each of the first three as mentioned above. It was hypothesized that the household item with the lowest pH, and hence most acidic, would be the most efficient at dissolving the kidney stones.Kidney stones are common and poses health issues of varying severity. Some of the causes includesdehydration from low fluid intake which is a major factor for the formation of kidney stones. Other factors that increases the risk of kidney formation include excessive intake of refined sugars, animalproteins, sodium, fructose, high fructose corn syrup, grapefruit juice, and apple juice.
