Maggie Morris Dr. Cummings FYS .004 4 September 2007 Journal on The Summer Day 1. Who is the author and what perspective are they writing from? Mary Oliver was born in Cleveland, Ohio in 1935 where she later attended Ohio State University for a year before transferring to Vassar College. Vassar is a prestigious women’s college that is well known for its graduates in the arts especially writers and actors. In the 1980’s Oliver taught at Case Western Reserve University before moving in 1986 o Bucknell University where she held the honored title of “Poet in Residence.” However because she was the poet in residence that doesn’t necessarily mean that she taught at the university. In 1984 her collection of poetry called American Primitive won the Pulitzer Prize for Poetry. It is also an interesting fact that Oliver was a lesbian and some of the themes of some of her works are centered on that. 2.
