Maggie Morris Dr. Cummings FYS .004 September 6, 2007 Journal on The Unknown Citizen 1. Who is the author? The author of this poem is Wystan Hugh Auden who was born in York in 1907. He moved to Birmingham when he was young and grew up there with his family. Auden was an Anglo-American poet who is thought of by many as one of the greatest writers of the 20 th century. He began writing at the age of fifteen and over his entire career wrote over 400 poems. Auden is mainly noted for his stylistic and technical achievement in his works. He also has a very varied content in his works that allows for many different people of different beliefs to partake in the joy that his poems can bring. After growing up with his family in the United States, Auden moved back to England and taught at a boy’s prep school. He moved around Europe for a while teaching at different schools and writing. In his later life, he moved back with his partner to the United States. 2.
