Maggie Morris Dr. Cummings FYS 125 September 27, 2007 Journal on What Sort of Despotism Democratic Nations Have to Fear 1. Who is the author of this work? Alexis-Charles-Henri Clérel de Tocqueville known simply as Alexis de Tocqueville is the author of this work. Tocqueville was a French political thinker and historian who was born in Paris on July 29, 1805. His father was a royalist prefect from Normandy and his mother was a devout Roman Catholic who strongly advocated a return to the old regime. At the age of 16 he started at the College Royal in Metz to study philosophy, at which time he began to have doubts about the role of the aristocracy in French government. During this time he suffered a deep religious crisis that affected him for the rest of his life. When he finished college he moved back to Paris to study law. He was involved in politics until he refused to swear to Louis-Napoleon’s new regime. When he did not swear his allegiance he was banned from holding public office so he began to
