INTRODUCTIONAll Quiet on the Western Front by Erich Maria Remarque contains hidden passages that show the “collapse” of the big foundations: Identity in your work, duty to your country, and faithin the progress of humanity. Remarque shows the collapse of the frontier myth by writing about the battles and how trees and woods and fertile land can no longer protect them once they “vanish” in fire, smoke, and bombardments. The book talks about the new Eden and how insteadit is a burial ground of destruction. Then it talks about authority and how their schoolmaster, Kantorek, convinced them to enlist in the military and it ends up ruining their normal lives and scars them from the horrors of war. Remarque later shows the collapse of heroism by including the scene of Paul leaving just in time before the enemy gets a direct hit on the first dugout. Remarque shows the collapse of enlightenment rationalism by including the paragraph of Paul thinking about why the rumors are being spread and why the war can’t just end. Finally, Remarque does an excellent job describing the collapse of technology by showing the warfare advancements in technology and how much destruction and death it can cause. In All Quiet on the Western Front, Remarque is able to slip in hidden passages about the deterioration of the three big foundations.The Frontier Myth 1aIn chapter 4, Paul and the other soldiers are under heavy fire in a deeply wooded area. The passage describes the fields as a “surging sea” and the explosions like “daggers of flame”
(66). Then later it reads, “The wood vanishes, it is torn to pieces.” (66) This passage clearly
