O’ Meara CST8174 Lab #4 Objectives Installing a second HDD; Installing a CD-ROM Drive Partitioning and formatting a second hard drive Equipment : PC case with all components Antistatic wrist strap #2 Phillips Screwdriver Second HDD CD-ROM Drive IDE Cable CD-ROM drivers provided by the lab instructor Procedure : N.B. : Follow these procedures carefully. At all times; if you are unsure or are having problems, consult your lab teacher to insure that you are not inadvertently damaging the equipment. Make sure you are grounded properly using a wrist strap and open up your case. Verifying Drive Configuration First, verify the jumper settings of the hard drive. We will be configuring the drive as a slave drive, on the primary IDE interface. Make sure the system power is OFF before connecting the drive Determine the numbers of Cylinders/Heads/Sectors from the outside of the drive case. If this data is not visible, it will be necessary to power up the system, and determine this information as reported to the BIOS. Come back to this part of the lab once you’ve started your system, if this is the case Numbers of : Cylinders :_____________ Heads :_____________ Sectors :_____________ 1

CST8174 Lab 4 M. O’ Meara Verifying Jumper Settings The drive should be configured as a SLAVE. The side of the drive where the controller is visible (printed circuit board side) will have a set of jumpers with such markings as ‘SP, CS, … ‘ The opposite side should have a small sticker indicating the proper jumper settings for a master drive.
