Part 1 : First, I found the accurate melting point range of my unknown substance using a 2 ° C increase per minute. After everyone had recorded his or her ranges on the board, I approached a student whose substance had a very close range to mine. We mixed our substance 1:1 into a powder and melted it to find that the range stayed consistent so our unknowns were identical. If the unknowns were similar but not identical then the melting point range would have been lowered because mixed melting point ranges are lower than pure melting point ranges. This lower melting point range was evident when I mixed my substance with the similar substance of another student. Part 2: Melting Point-Composition Diagram The data for this diagram are located on page 4. Three of the ranges final temperatures (represented in bold ) were omitted from the average because the values were dramatically different from the others. In each case, the errant values are lower than the others, leading me to believe that some solid crystals were still present in the capillary
